Messenger, Missourinet

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

A few quick hits:

1.) If you haven’t read Tony Messenger’s post about his paper’s Labor Day coverage, read it now (scroll down the page to find the post). Have you ever heard of an editorial page editor saying that his paper should work harder to be more fair? Me neither.

2.) While you’re there, check out Tony’s “The level of discourse…” post as well. I’m sure the debate over acknowledging/not acknowledging extreme viewpoints is one that has raged in newsrooms since the invention of movable type, and this post gives us an editor’s perspective. As far as the topic at hand (immigration), some of the most restrictive/punitive immigration policies are pushed by xenophobes and racists; that doesn’t mean, though, that everyone who agrees with those ideological positions is a bigot, and it certainly doesn’t mean that those positions are invalid.

3.) Is it just me, or is “Legislation Attacking Illegal Immigrants Proposed” the type of headline you’d find on a partisan blog? I’m certainly not used to seeing that type of loaded language on Missourinet.

This Week in Blogging, Sept. 5

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

Mayor Slay suggests that we start aggressively recruiting younger poll workers. He also provides St. Louisans with an alternative take (via New York Times coverage) on the local economy that differs from the picture the St. Louis Post-Dispatch presented.

Katie Favazza critiques George Will’s critique of Missouri’s U.S. Senate candidates and the stem cell issue. Tim Hilton weighed in on the Will column as well.

Jaime Allman focuses his attention on national lefty lunacy this week.

Matthew at the Arch City Chronicle took a look at the St. Louis Public Schools’ MAP scores and how they may cost the district its accreditation. Randy Turner of The Turner Report gives us a teacher’s perspective on the Springfield and Joplin MAP numbers.

PubDef.net taps the Dems a little in the Sunday Funnies.

Jeff Roe doesn’t like the fact that Emanuel Cleaver visited Turkey during the August recess. According to Roe, “The Source is currently investigating the terrorist ties of the ‘Muslim clerics’ with which Cleaver met.”

Roy Temple’s YouTube page has a video of a PBS segment on the stem cell issue and the Jim Talent - Claire McCaskill race.

And of course, your cup will runneth over with the daily posts at CDT Politics Blog, KY3 Blog, KC Buzz Blog, and P-D Political Fix.

Finally, many of you Dems on the western side of the state know Jason Kander, who is currently preparing to serve in Afghanistan. You can keep up with his activities here. Dems will enjoy reading about their friend, and Republicans will appreciate the references to firearms.

PSA

Friday, September 1st, 2006

It’s the Friday of a long weekend, and since you’re not doing any real work today anyway (govt. employees, I’m looking at you), you might as well take half a minute out of your daydreaming and watch this public service announcement from Sarah Silverman and Comedy Central. Then share the message with your Democrat friends.

Have a safe Labor Day weekend!
